Croquis de Paris

This is a selection of 40 abstract, impressionist photos from Paris, France, May 28 to June 4, 2025. They’re from the seven days Rhonda and I were there to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. The photos were taken as we walked about—flaneuring.

These were taken with an iPhone 15 Pro Max, set with long exposures using the Small Shutter Pro App to intentionally blur and create abstract and impressionist photos. Paris offered a landscape of narrow streets, limestone facades, cafes, squares, parks, and, of course, people. With long exposures and quick movements—using the technique known as Intentional Camera Movement—light flows like a liquid, here with a definite impressionist vibe.

The Rest of the Story

Rhonda and I stayed near the Eiffel tower, on Avenue de Suffren. We arrived from Cologne on May 28th and left for home in Canandaigua on June 4th. In Paris, we jumped on the metro and walked places we had never walked before. We visited Connie and Jim, friends from Canandaigua. We toured the Chateau de Fontainebleau apartments—in reverse—with Alex, Kathryn and Christine Marie, its director. We flaneured: Montmartre, the Latin Quarter, Canal Saint-Martin, Luxembourg Gardens.

On May 31st, to celebrate our 50th and to commemorate our love and partnership, we fixed a lock, (inscribed to us in Cologne), to a fence by seats overlooking Square Louise Michel, and Paris to the south, with the magnificent Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre rising behind us. In the evening, we celebrated with a cruise on the Seine as Paris fell into illuminated shadows. Staggeringly, it was the same night Paris-Saint Germain won its first UEFA European Championship against Milan. The score? FIVE-ZERO! We celebrated our 50th as Paris celebrated!
