In the “Creative Process,” James Baldwin writes, “The state of birth, suffering, love, and death are…extreme, universal, and inescapable…perhaps the primary distinction of the artist is that he must actively cultivate that state which most men, necessarily, must avoid; the state of being alone… the aloneness in which one discovers that life is tragic, and therefore unutterably beautiful.”
