HOME – Here in the fluidity of black and white are the fleeting spirits of the ceremonial fire, life’s algorithmic dance on the Myakka River, the artistry of water in the stone of Lower Antelope Canyon, and winter abstractions from the woods of the Finger Lakes.

Below is my ekphrastic writing that seeks to give my photographic work a second life, to describe it, extend it, deepen it. These are the images that have stirred in me a need to explore or amplify feelings and ideas, or that resonated with a particular passage from a reading.

From the unfathomable physicality of life…

Chiseled in the darkness of stone, Lie the buried, unfathomable fire, The sounds of the pounding sea, The evolution of hands to possess, shape, subjugate. His Breath, His Word—Ihíio, Itlátol— Aztec salutations and obeisance now silenced. The offer of this man carrying...

How to express this need to flee, this need to stay,
Or pretend that this wild, uncertain heart isn’t to be feared?

The trumpeter
Throws his eyes
Upwards
To the chandeliers
Like lighted sparrows…

And so it lands
In time, the random ripplings across its surface,
The ‘photographic frame.’ The architecture of evolution…

When that moment comes,
That final illumination that comes to all,
I hope to be aware of the earth as it turns from the sun…

We seek to make visible the immediacy of the unseen
—what is lived—
That falls away and vanishes without words or form.
Yet here…
